CLARK COUNTY, Wash. (KPTV) - A 16-year-old boy is presumed to have drowned while swimming in the Columbia River on Wednesday night, according to Clark County Fire District 6.
Officials say witnesses reported the 16-year-old boy was swimming towards a wing dam at Frenchman’s Bar when he suddenly went underwater and did not resurface. It was estimated that he was about 20 yards offshore at the time.
Multiple agencies, including rescuers from Clark-Cowlitz Fire and Rescue, Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office, the Vancouver Police Department, the Clark County Technical Rescue Team, Portland Fire & Rescue and the U.S. Coast Guard, responded to help search for the teenager.
By 9 p.m., officials say crews shifted from a rescue to a recovery operation.
