DES MOINES, Iowa —

At the Iowa State Fair, "Meeting on a Stick" offers a safe space for individuals in alcohol recovery, located on the second floor of Jalapeno Pete's.

The fair is filled with things to eat and drink for everyone, but for some, all those options can be challenging. That's why on the second floor of Jalapeno Pete's, "Meeting on a Stick" is holding a safe space for those who need it.

At 7 a.m., before gates open, vendors roll up their tents, or competitions start, an alcohol recovery meeting is happening.

"One of my home groups had a flier going around, and everyone thought it was a joke because it had, like, a corn dog," said a participant. "And it said meeting on a stick. And I'm like, whoa, wait. I've been looking for that for years."
