NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - The North Charleston Police Department wants to flip the script on the city’s reputation for crime and violence as they point to newly released data to make their point.

“I think it is time for a new narrative about North Charleston,” Karen Cordray, associate chief with the North Charleston Police Department, said. “We’re a safe community. We engage with our citizens and we’re connected with our citizens.”

Corday released new crime statistics showing a downward trend in the state’s third-largest city on Thursday.

“Right now, we’re down 30% in homicides. We’re down 22% in robberies and 10% in aggravated assaults,” Corday said. “Overall, in violent crime, we’re down 10%.”
