LANCASTER COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM) -- Protected lands cover may parts of Lancaster County, but nature also calls from within the city.

On Thursday, Lancaster City Council unanimously approved a 99-year deal with nonprofit Partners for Environmental Stewardship to transform the northern portion of Sunnyside Peninsula into a nature preserve and environmental center. It will cover about nine acres of the peninsula, while the entire preserve will include 70 acres of land.

Plans for the project are years in the making. Made up of mostly wooded land and a flooded quarry, the Sunnyside Peninsula hasn't been used for much. Developers scrapped a previous plan to build apartment complexes due to the layout of the peninsula.
