WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — Thursday marked 90 years since President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act into law, and AARP Kansas hosted a celebration at Botanica to honor the milestone.

The federal program provides monthly benefits to people over 65 and to individuals with disabilities, regardless of age. It remains a major source of income for millions, covering essentials like housing and medication.

“It provides housing, it provides opportunities for medications – all of those essentials that help create a better life for so many people,” said Glenda DuBoise, state director for AARP Kansas. “We want to be sure Social Security is there for today’s retirees, tomorrow’s workers, and future generations.”
