ST. BERNARD PARISH, La. —

Nearly 20 years after Hurricane Katrina, work is underway right now to make sure our coast is stronger for the next storm.

WDSU reporter Elizabeth Kuebel took an airboat ride to the banks of Lake Borgne to get an up close look at the marsh creation project there. Advertisement

It was a visit to some of the newest land in Louisiana, thanks to the state-led Lake Borgne Marsh Creation project.

The idea is to pull sediment to turn open water into marsh to slow a storm's surge.

It will make up what will be the state's largest marsh creation project ever by acreage, restoring 2,700 acres.

The entire project is expected to be finished by the end of the year.
