TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — An ordinance that has been in the works for about a year now, has been approved.

The city engineer and lead inspector brought this ordinance to the attention of the council and tonight, after some amendments, the Terre Haute City Council acted on the rental registry ordinance.

The registry is a tracker tool that will be used to identify rental property issues and have contact information of the owners or local managers of those properties. The concern that sparked this ordinance was out-of-town and out-of-state ownership. The goal is to hold landlords or owners accountable and bridge the gap for communication.

According to president Todd Nation, over half of Terre Haute residents are renters.
