CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - A Waterloo man was sentenced to over three decades in federal prison for smuggling and distributing fentanyl.
In September 2024, 44-year-old Javoni Butler, of Waterloo, was convicted of one count of conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance, one count of international money laundering, and one count of possession with intent to distribute controlled substances.
According to evidence, Butler travelled to Mexico to receive fentanyl pills and powder between January 2022 and December 2023.
Police say he smuggled over 10,000 fentanyl pills and powder into the United States and took the drugs to Waterloo, Iowa. He also had guns, threatened violence against others, and organized the drug-related activities of multiple people during that period.
