When I think of “cultural sites,” I think of structures built many generations in the past — monuments, government buildings, religious statues or museums.

They’ve always been there, at least in our lifetimes, and if suddenly they were not it would be a tragedy, (think Bidwell Mansion).

We seldom think about what it was like when these cultural sites were brand new.

When I first saw “Our Hands” in downtown Chico, I thought the artwork was rather simple and not worth all of the money the city paid. The hands have now been around for half my lifetime and have become part of “our town.” I have posed with friends for countless photos and come to appreciate the river, the trees, the houses all held together with those strong fingers.
