PILSEN – Pilsen neighbors resoundingly voted against a controversial proposal to expand its tax-increment financing district to the whole neighborhood, according to the results of a survey held by the local alderman’s office last year.

About 80 percent of responding neighbors in the 25th Ward — or 1,441 votes — were against expanding Pilsen’s TIF, according to results posted on the 25th Ward Office’s website earlier this week. Only 383 votes were in favor of expanding the TIF, results show.

The TIF proposal exposed deep divisions among neighbors, with some worrying an expanded TIF in Pilsen would lead to more gentrification and longtime families will be pushed out, and supporters saying the measure would help homeowners stay in the neighborhood.
