LOGAN — The Bear River Health Department has confirmed the first human cases of West Nile virus in the region. Officials confirmed Friday morning, two residents of Cache County have been diagnosed with the virus.
West Nile virus is transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito, which becomes infected by feeding on birds that carry the virus. Symptoms can range from a mild, flu-like illness to more severe neurological problems in rare cases. Health officials are not releasing any personal information about the individuals.
The announcement comes after mosquito abatement districts in Box Elder and Cache counties have reported multiple mosquito traps testing positive for the virus. Officials expect more positive traps in the coming weeks and are urging everyone in the region to take
