One of the UK's most influential bailiff companies overcharged people it was pursuing for unpaid debts, according to a new report by The Guardian .

Marston Holdings has now launched a refunds programme and apologised to consumers.

It has stated that refund cheques had been sent to “all of those affected” and that the issue that caused the problem "has been fixed.”

The company was overcharging “enforcement fees” related to unpaid road traffic penalties it was chasing.

Enforcement fees are fixed fees charged by bailiffs during the process of collecting a debt.

According to the Guardian report, thousands may have been overcharged, though an exact figure has not been stated.
