Jeffrey Vappie, the former New Orleans Police Department bodyguard who a federal grand jury accused last summer of wire fraud and false statement counts, was indicted on fresh charges in Friday's indictment of Mayor LaToya Cantrell .

Cantrell, the second New Orleans mayor in history to be indicted and face criminal charges, and the first to face charges while in office, has been the subject of a years-long corruption investigation that overshadowed her second term.

Cantrell's former bodyguard, Vappie's relationship with the mayor spawned a series of investigations and accusations of an illicit affair. He was indicted by a federal grand jury in June 2024 on seven counts of wire fraud and one count of lying to investigators. He pleaded not guilty to those charges in August of last ye
