BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) - North Dakota health officials are urging residents to take precautions against mosquito bites as the state reports a rise in West Nile virus cases.

As of August 14, the state has 26 confirmed cases of West Nile in humans. Of those 11 people were hospitalized and nine involved nervous system complications. Thirty-eight mosquito pools and three birds have also tested positive for the virus.

HHS recommends North Dakotans take these precautions to avoid mosquito bites: • Use insect repellent registered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that contain ingredients such as DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus, PMD, 2-undecanone, and permethrin (clothing only). Always follow the directions on the manufacturer’s label for safe and effective use
