The BBC has apologised to Newark MP Robert Jenrick after he was accused of "xenophobia" on a Radio 4 show. The broadcaster said a guest on the station used language that "went beyond" what it expects of spakers on the Thought For The Day segment.

It comes after the MP and shadow justice secretary wrote an article in the Daily Mail on Sunday (August 13) about illegal migration and boat crossings.

In it, the Conservative said: "I certainly don’t want my children to share a neighbourhood with men from backwards countries who broke into Britain illegally and about whom we know next to nothing."
