Litterbugs and lazybones beware. City officials have their sights set on cleaning up after a recent uptick in complaints about Billings’ trashy appearance.

Public Works Director Debi Meling said several factors are contributing to the litter around the city. And there are a few easy steps people can take to help.

Residents should bag and tie all of their trash and make sure the lid of their garbage can is fully closed.

Meling said a lot of people don’t realize loose trash spills and can make a mess when a truck picks up an overfilled container, even if the lid is almost closed.

Yard waste, however, should not be bagged so it can be composted.

Containers also need to be placed 4 feet apart to allow the trucks enough room to pick them up without knocking them over.
