President Donald Trump deployed federal troops to the streets of Washington, D.C., last week to combat what he characterized as out-of-control crime.
The move raises the possibility that the commander-in-chief could send National Guard soldiers to other major American cities, such as Detroit, which has a violent crime rate that’s nearly double the U.S. capital’s.
Detroit has a higher violent crime rate than most American cities, with 1,781 violent crimes per 100,000 people compared to Washington, D.C.’s 926. The FBI defines violent crime as “offenses that involve force or threat of force,” including rape, murder, aggravated assault, robbery and nonnegligent manslaughter.
