FRANKLIN COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ) - A family is in mourning after the death of a man in a crash with a Franklin County Sheriff’s deputy.

Joey Callaway, 55 of Rocky Mount, died after the crash that took place July 8, 2025.

His family says, “We are so saddened and are in total disbelief that this has happened and that Joey is no longer with us. Joey was very well loved by so many and this tragic loss has affected us along with the entire community. At this time we are concentrating on celebrating the life Joey lived and the legacy he has left behind.”

Callaway, who won a Virginia High School League wrestling championship in 1988, died a month after the crash.

The deputy has recovered from his injuries and is back at work, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
