BUTTE COUNTY, Calif. – Health officials in Butte County have confirmed the first human case of West Nile Virus for the 2025 season.
This marks the ninth confirmed case of the virus in California as of August 8.
The Butte County Department of Public Health Thursday announced the infection and urged residents to take precautions.
The virus is typically active from May through October, with August being a peak month for infections in the area.
Officials say the infected person is between 30 and 40 years old and is currently experiencing a severe case of the illness.
West Nile Virus infections generally fall into three categories. Eight in 10 people are asymptomatic, one in 5 experience mild to moderate symptoms, and less than 1 in 150 develop severe neurologic symptoms.
