On my desk in my office, I have a 3-cent postage stamp encased in glass, a gift from my friend Anne Brockman who edits TulsaPeople magazine.

The quote on it from Joseph Pulitzer reads: “Our republic and its press will rise or fall together.”

Pulitzer is the namesake for American journalism’s top honor. He was not perfect, but you can thank him for introducing comic strips and sports coverage to newspapers.

I bring him up because I have had several people explain to me, very nicely, that they actively avoid the news. Surveys show that about 40% of Americans now actively avoid the news, a new record since such surveys have been conducted.
