In response to your Aug. 8 article, “ Residents vow to fight to keep lake and dam ,” I believe the focus on costs fails in two places. Egregiously, estimates have varied widely, and arms-length peer review and third-party vetting have not been presented. Most importantly, looking at short-term financial cost misses the heart of the matter.

Investment in the protection of our region’s important assets is equally, if not more important. It is imperative that we become better stewards of our history. These lakes improve health, build social ties, preserve history, and strengthen a region’s sense of place. They bond generations and attract visitors and build our trust in others.
