BELLE, W.Va. (WSAZ)-With all sorts of railroad tracks and industrial plants in our region, chemical spills and leaks are an occasional fact of life. Just this past June, a nitrous oxide ( chemically, NOx) spill at the Austin Powder Company in Vinton County Ohio created a high risk zone for contamination and threat to health. That spill was soon contained and after a many hour period, the evacuation and shelter in place orders were lifted.

Saturday it was an ammonia (chemically: NH3) leak at Chemours Plant in Belle, WV that forced a few hour shelter in place in parts of Kanawha County. That ordinance was soon lifted when the spill was contained and the risk to health had ended.

Now all leaks and spills have their own chemistry and hence threats to health and the environment. Through the y
