PORTLAND, Oregon — A burglar stole a lottery safe from Mad Greek Deli in Northwest Portland after hiding in the business until it closed, according to the Washington County Sheriff's Office and the store owner.

According to a Facebook post from the deli, the burglar "pretended to be a patron and hid in our broom closet until after we closed and tore the lottery safe off our floor."

The theft happened on the night of August 14. The safe was recovered empty the following morning in Beaverton.

The owner told KGW there was close to $30,000 in the safe.

"The case is assigned to the Property Crimes Unit (PCU) detectives for further follow up," the Washington County Sheriff's Office told KGW.
