A 63-year-old American tourist suffered "severe injuries" when he was attacked by a shark while he was spearfishing in The Bahamas on Sunday, police said.

The victim was treated a local clinic on the island of Abaco after the attack near Big Grand Cay at about 1:00 p.m local time, authorities revealed, adding that he was subsequently airlifted back to the U.S for further treatment.

It is unclear what type of shark is believed to have attacked the victim, whose identity and current condition remain unknown.
