PORTAGE — A Merrillville woman faces a felony charge of neglect after allegedly leaving an adult in her care in the backseat of a car during the recent extreme heat, according to a charging document.

Dywanna Fleming, 35, who appears to have bonded out of the Porter County Jail after being arrested Friday, is charged with neglect of a dependent, records show.

She is accused of leaving the adult alone in a vehicle in 90 degree heat with a heat index of 102 degrees shortly before 1 p.m. Aug. 9, according to police. The windows of the vehicle were reportedly barely rolled down and the vehicle was not running.

Police said Fleming returned to the vehicle 17 minutes after they were called to the site, located outside the Meijer store along U.S. 6 in Portage.
