HATTERAS, N.C. — Hurricane Erin is moving toward the East Coast, bringing the threat of dangerous surf, flooding, and damaging winds to North Carolina’s Outer Banks.

The storm is expected to cause life-threatening conditions beginning Tuesday, Aug. 19, with forecasters warning of ocean overwash, extreme beach erosion, and road closures along N.C. Highway 12.

A steady stream of cars is heading northbound on N.C. 12.

Visitors are asked to evacuate by 10 a.m. on Monday, while permanent residents are asked to be out of their homes
