Northern Michigan underwent a historical change in March as freezing rain fell for 60 hours, leveling out forests and coating power lines in thick ice. Five months since the devasting storm and Northern Michigan is “making a remarkable post-ice storm comeback.”

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources, along with trail partners and volunteers, have logged an impressive 41,000 hours of cleanup and recovery across the 12 impacted counties.

As of August, all impacted state parks, boating access sites and state forest campgrounds (except one) have reopened. Additionally, 65% of state-managed motorized and nonmotorized trails have reopened, according to the DNR.

The DNR has begun modifying State Forest Management Plan that was slated for completion and final release this summer.
