CLAY CO. — A man was killed after being struck by a vehicle Sunday night in northern Clay County. The driver has been arrested on charges of causing death while operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

The incident occurred at approximately 7:40 p.m. on County Road 1450 North near State Road 59. A preliminary investigation by Indiana State Police Trooper Caleb Hughes and Trooper Rondell Shelton found that Courtney Withers, a 36-year-old woman from Carbon, was driving westbound when her vehicle struck a pedestrian, identified as 48-year-old Samuel Chambers, also of Carbon.

Chambers was pronounced dead at the scene by the Clay County Coroner’s Office.

Trooper Hughes reported that Withers showed signs of impairment and failed a field sobriety test. A certified chemical test was administered
