CLEVELAND, Ohio — Strong east winds are producing waves of 3 to 5 feet on Lake Erie on Monday, creating dangerous conditions for both swimmers and boaters.

A small craft advisory has been issued until 10 p.m. for the nearshore waters of Lake Erie from the Toledo area to New York.

The National Weather Service in Cleveland advised inexperienced mariners, especially those with small vessels, to avoid navigating in the hazardous conditions.

In addition, forecasters warned that strong currents can carry swimmers away from shore through a sand bar and along structures extending out into the lake.

“Wind and wave action will cause currents on the lakeshore,” forecasters wrote in a statement . “Swimmers should not enter the water.”

Otherwise, Northeast Ohio is off to a pleasant Monday. Abu
