SHENANGO TWP., Pa. (WKBN) -- West Nile virus has been detected in mosquitoes collected from Shenango Township in Mercer County.
This is the ninth sample to test positive for this virus in Mercer County this year. There have been no human cases of West Nile virus in the county, though Allegheny County reported its first human case on Monday.
Additional monitoring will be done in Mercer County, in the area where these mosquito samples were collected, and appropriate control work will be conducted, according to a news release from the Mercer County Conservation District.
According to the agency, most people with West Nile virus do not develop symptoms, but severe illness is possible for those over the age of 60 or with certain medical conditions.
