Allentown officials announced Monday they will delay the evacuation of the Jordan Creek homeless encampment by 35 days, moving the deadline from Aug. 25 to Sept. 29, to coordinate with the opening of the YMCA’s seasonal warming station .
Mayor Matt Tuerk said the extension aims to ensure individuals can transition directly into temporary shelter without interruption of services.
“This extension allows us to coordinate the transition so that individuals who would normally rely on the YMCA have a safe place to go the day they leave the encampment,” Tuerk said in a statement. “It balances compassion with our responsibility to protect people from foreseeable harm.”
