TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — The Florida Department of Health issued a mosquito-borne illness advisory after a locally acquired case of dengue fever was confirmed in Hillsborough County.

The DOH-Hillsborough and Hillsborough County Mosquito Control said they are coordinating surveillance and prevention efforts by conducting aerial spraying.

Health officials said dengue fever can be a painful, debilitating disease, but it is rarely fatal.

Symptoms appear within three to 14 days after the bite of an infected mosquito and include: sudden onset of fever, severe headache, eye pain, muscle and joint pain and bleeding.

Gastrointestinal symptoms like vomiting and diarrhea may also be present in some cases, officials said.

There is no treatment for dengue fever.
