BALTIMORE — Baltimore firefighters responded by land and water, enlisting tug boats to help the 23 people on board the 750-foot commercial carrier that had reportedly exploded in the city's harbor on Monday.

The blast happened at around 6:30 p.m. on the Patapsco River not far from the site of the former Francis Scott Key Bridge, which collapsed in March 2024.

The ship stayed afloat after the explosion and none of the ship's passengers were hurt, according to the Baltimore City Fire Department.

"Signs of damage consistent with a fire and explosion," BCFD reported on Monday, adding that the United States Coast Guard and the Port of Baltimore had been helping its its firefighters respond.

The W-Sapphire, the bulk carrier damaged in the fire, has since been moved into a designated anchora
