ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - Roanoke City Public Schools is taking its student ID program district-wide after two years of working out the kinks.

Students will return to school Tuesday, August 19, and the district will require all students and staff to have their IDs on and visible from day one. There will be a two-week grace period, but, after that, the district will require the badge.

Wesley Williams, the district’s executive director of technology, said the district is counting on parents and other family members to help.

“It’s similar to students carrying a book bag or a device, we just would like for them now to carry their ID badge, and we think that it’s really going to help us when it comes to safety and security,” Williams said.
