A member of Haiti's transitional government denied on Monday that he had signed a contract with American mercenary Erik Prince to flood the Caribbean country with paid militiamen to supposedly combat the island's criminal gangs.

On Monday, Fritz Alphonse Jean, one of the nine members of the CPT, published a note denying any knowledge of the contract and drawing his colleagues' attention to what he calls "rumors."

According to him, an agreement of this magnitude could not be implemented by a transitional government, much less without debate. "The persistent rumors on this issue should be a matter of concern to all CPT members, as they raise concerns about serious consequences," he writes.
