LAKE LURE, N.C. (FOX Carolina) - Officials report demolition on the Lake Lure Flowering Bridge began on Monday.

The Town of Lake Lure announced the bridge suffered significant structural impacts during Helene.

Many items from the bridge deck were salvaged, including an antique lamp post, an eagle statue, several custom-made hay rack flower boxes, and some of the valuable plants.

The decorative balustrades and the curved ends of the guardrails will also be preserved and used in the new gardens.

Demolition on the bridge is anticipated to take several weeks.
