Today in History revisits the Monday, August 19, 1889 edition of the Grand Forks Herald and highlights a story on Grafton, N.D., being on the brink of a newspaper boom. For some time, only Bates’ paper dominated the local press, but dissatisfaction with its neutral stance led to a surge of new publications.

Grafton will Have Plenty of Newspapers Shortly.

GRAFTON, Aug. 17—Grafton is indeed blessed in some respects and for some time Bates’ paper has had the field and he has made a noble effort to cover the same without regard to factions, but his straddling has made everybody tired and within two weeks there will be no less than five papers here.
