CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - The gradual weakening of Hurricane Erin that started Monday afternoon continued overnight and was still underway Tuesday morning.
As of Tuesday morning, Hurricane Erin listed as a Category 2 hurricane, which is a non-major hurricane. Erin had reached a rare Category 5 status over the weekend, and began the week as a Category 4 hurricane.
Erin’s maximum wind speeds were near 110 mph on Tuesday morning -- and that is really only on the right side of the storm, away from the Bahamas.
The storm was coming under the influence of drier air and shear to the north, which was causing Erin to widen out. Hurricane Erin was projected to be a large storm midweek as it passes the Carolinas on Wednesday and Thursday.
As the storm widens, stronger wind gusts -- which have been
