MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - UW-Madison Police Department is mourning the loss of a beloved former K9 on its police force.
UWPD announced Tuesday K9 Kobalt has reached the end of his watch.
Kobalt died on Monday, with his loved ones surrounding him, after a brief illness.
“We are grateful for Kobalt’s years of service to UWPD and the community,” UWPD said.
K9 Kobalt was born and trained in Holland before heading to the U.S. when he was 1 year old, explained UWPD.
K9 Kobalt started at UWPD in 2018 after being partnered with former Sgt. Nicki Zautner. The pair worked together on UWPD’s narcotics detection K9 team.
UWPD also recognized Kobalt’s certifications evidence recovery and human tracking. He helped assist Dane County and state officers, as well.
K9 Kobalt retired in December 2024.
