The season of Harmful Algae Blooms in North Jersey is approaching its peak with four beaches on two different lakes closed as of this week and several other potential areas being tested in the region.
Beaches and a splash park at Darlington County Park were closed for about a week earlier in August amid a HAB outbreak — a proliferation of algae in the water that accompanies the growth of potentially fatal cyanobacteria.
Levels high enough to warrant beach closures have also been detected at four other northern sites, according to the state: Lake Rogerene in Roxbury, Morris County; and three beaches along Greenwood Lake in northern Passaic County: Awosting, Greenwood Lake Beach Club and Lakeside Community Beach Club. Testing this month triggered a public health "advisory" for each,
