DOTHAN, Ala (WDHN) -- After working for the city of Dothan for 38 years, Chief Larry Williams is making a bittersweet decision to hang up his helmet.

It was always my dream to be a Dothan firefighter and to work my way through the ranks. I'm appreciative; it's an honor. This is really tough for me now," said Williams.

Williams' decorated career started in 1982, when he worked as a paramedic with Dothan Pilcher Ambulance Service and became chief in 2006. He says his biggest takeaway from being chief is cherishing the people on his team.

"A lot of people don't even know their names, or what they are going through in life, and they are committed to work and be here for the people, that's a legacy," said Williams.
