HOOVER, Ala. —
A Hoover City Council candidate has reported receiving threats related to her appearance and faith.
Tanveer Patel is running for the council's Place 1 seat. Her attorney claims she has been verbally attacked because she is Muslim, highlighting several hateful messages left on her social media pages.
Patel, who has been part of the Hoover community for almost 25 years, said she feels strongly for her city and country, which is why she is running for office. She described the threats as frightening and heartbreaking.
"No matter your faith, background. Every citizen has a right to live free and participate in democracy. Hate will not win," Patel said.
The Hoover Police Department confirmed Patel filed a report. Her opponent, Robin Schultz, issued a statement condemning the
