A child died after police say he found a gun in an east Birmingham apartment and accidentally shot himself.
The shooting happened shortly before 11:30 a.m. Tuesday in Birmingham’s Madison Park apartments off Sunhill Road.
East Precinct officers were called to the 700 block of 24th Avenue Northwest on a report of person shot.
They arrived to find the 6-year-old boy with a gunshot wound to the head. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced him dead on the scene.
“That was my only grandson,” a man at the scene cried out.
Officer De’Rell Freeman the child was in an apartment with two adults when he went into a room, found an unsecured gun and shot himself.
Both adults were undergoing questioning at police headquarters. It was not immediately clear if criminal charges would be filed.
