MINNEAPOLIS — Minneapolis city leaders shared the first renderings of a potential pedestrian plaza at the intersection of 38th Street and Chicago Avenue in South Minneapolis. The intersection, where George Floyd was murdered by former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin in 2020, is now known as George Floyd Square .
The pedestrian plaza concept, which would close the area to most vehicle traffic and preserve the site as a memorial, was presented Tuesday during a city-hosted open house. It's part of a broader effort to gather community feedback before any final decisions are made.
For now, the plan remains a proposal. The city will hold additional open houses, collecting input that will be summarized and presented to the Minneapolis City Council on December 4, according to Nathan K
