Secretary of the Army Dan Driscoll’s demand to renew Hawaii military land leases in 60 days is yet another manufactured emergency (“Maneuvering renegotiations,” Star-Advertiser, Aug. 17). The U.S. government has had 61 years to work out an alternative. The existing leases have four years left.
By then, it will be 2029. Driscoll will be out of office and so will his role model for negotiations, Donald Trump.
