JACKSONVILLE, Ala. ( WBRC ) - Contractors are working on several pedestrian improvements along State Route 21 through the Jacksonville State University campus, according to the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT).

A new, wider sidewalk between Brewer Hall and Nisbet Street NW opened to students on Wednesday, in time for their first day of classes.

Other upgrades in progress include pedestrian barrier islands, road resurfacing, traffic control markings, and signage.

ALDOT said Jax State pitched in about $200,000 and $800,000 in federal funds were used for the grant project.
