BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WBRC ) - While homicides are down in Birmingham this year, dozens of families are still grieving loved ones lost to gun violence in years past.

Wednesday, August 20 marked one year since 22-year-old D’Anthony Jones was shot and killed in Ensley.

His family visited the Highland Memorial Gardens cemetery to pay tribute to their brother and son, whom they have not forgotten.

“365 days of no texts, no calls, no smiles, no hugs, no ‘Hey mama how you doing?’” said Reponsa Jones, the man’s mother. “It’s the worst thing that could ever happen to anybody.”

Despite the rain, paper lanterns lifted into the sky for Jones.
