WHEATLAND, N.D. — A large flash flood in Cass County on the night of Aug. 5 caused thousands of dollars in damage for a Wheatland family and left a culvert in need of replacement.

The storm, described by Cass County Engineer Kyle Litchy as “closer to a 50-, or maybe even 100-year event,” dumped heavy rains over several hours, flooding roads and filling yards.

“Our infrastructure is not rated for a 6-inch rain event,” Litchy said.

Caleb Kutz, a local resident, criticized a blocked culvert near his home after the storm caused extensive damage. Work is underway to fix the culvert on Front Street, which the county says collapsed, although repairs fall under the township’s jurisdiction.
