FARGO — Families had a chance to learn about monarch butterflies on Wednesday night, Aug. 20, as they began their migration.
Urban Plains Park hosted a monarch butterfly tagging event Wednesday. Children were encouraged to catch butterflies and bring them to a table to put a sticker with a number on the wing.
Once the monarch butterfly completes its migration to Mexico, organizers hope someone will report that number.
Organizers told WDAY News that children could still learn even if they didn’t catch a butterfly.
"If somebody doesn't actually get a monarch butterfly that they tag, they're learning so much and getting more connected to nature than they were minutes ago, so it's just a really good opportunity to learn about the environment and connect with our community," said Amanda Boo
