The trial of actor and filmmaker Tumpe Mtaya, popularly known as Mphwedo, faced another setback today after key prosecution witnesses failed to appear in court, despite a standing order issued two weeks ago.
According to the prosecution, some of the witnesses— including the alleged child victim — are no longer willing to testify.
Mtaya is facing serious charges of repeatedly having sexual intercourse with an underage girl, allegations to which he has pleaded not guilty.
Today was expected to mark the beginning of witness presentations by the State, but proceedings stalled once again.
In light of the ongoing delays, Mtaya’s lawyer, Khwima Mchizi, has called on the court to dismiss the case, citing the government’s failure to effectively prosecute.
